Nainital is the judicial capital of Uttarakhand & house the High Court of the state, it is also the headquarter of the Kumaon Division.

Nainital is situated in the Kumaon foothills of the outer Himalayas & is 285 km away from the state capital Dehradun, 345 km away from the national capital New Delhi. It is situated at an altitude of 1,938 meters (6,358 ft) of sea level & city is set in a valley containing an eye-shaped lake (approx. 2 miles circumference) & is surrounded by mountain peaks like Naina Peak (8,579ft) to the north, Deopatha (7,999 ft) to the west & Ayarpatha (7,474 ft) to the south.

After the Anglo-Nepalese war 1814-16, Britisher took over the Kumaon Hills & Nainital Hill Station was founded in 1841 when the first European house was built by P. Baron, a sugar trader from Shahjahanpur. Very soon this place becomes popular among British soldiers & colonial officers, who came to Nainital with families to escape the scorching heat of the plain area. In the 19^th century, some of the prestigious English schools were established in Nainital for British children.

According to Hindu mythology, when Lord Shiva was carrying the charred body of Devi Sati to Kailash her eyes “Nain” fell here & therefore this place came to be known as “Nain – Tal” or the Lake of Eye. To mark the memory of this event a Naina Devi Temple was built where Goddess Shakti is worshiped by the devotees. The temple is idyllically situated on the north shore of aesthetic Naini Lake.

How to Reach: 

By Road: Nainital is very well connected by road from all major cities of Northern part of India including NH 87 which connects Nainital with Rudrapur & Rampur. New Delhi is around 300 km from Nainital which takes around 6-7 driving hrs to reach. Various other services like AC, Non-AC, Sleeper & Volvo busses are also available & being offered by some popular transporters & state roadways bodies. If you are confident enough of your hill driving skills you can drive your car & reach Nainital.

By Train: Kathgodam Railway Station is just 34 km away from Nainital, which serves as the main railway station to reach here. Kathgodam railway station enjoys very good connectivity with a major station like New Delhi, Lucknow & Howrah. Some popular trains of this route are Ranikhet Express, Uttar Sampark, Kranti Express, Bagh Express, Dehradun Kathgodam Express, and AnvtKgmShatabdi Express.

By Flight: Pantnagar airport is the closest airport which is only 65 km away from Nainital. Most of the air traffic to Pantnagar airport includes private chartered flights. There are no commercial flights operating to and from here. New Delhi (IGI Airport) & Dehradun (Jolly Grant Airport) are two other airports around 345Kms & 265 km respectively away from Nainital & which can be considered while planning a trip to Nainital.

Best Time to Travel: The best time to visit Nainital is from March to June which is the summer/spring season. But from June to September Slightly cooler with frequent rain showers.
